Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships this year.

Players are granted the right to contest certain rulings from the official, following the protocol already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
